Your Digital Camcorder Hard Drive Explained

If you previously were using the older versions of the digital camcorders, and have been having trouble of changing the tape often enough, now there is no more need of it! Digital camcorders now come with hard drives; you can simply save the whole movie, or several, without having to delete the previous ones, or even changing each and every time you finish one movie.

This digital camcorder hard drive is similar a computer hard drive; in fact they are very much same as a laptop hard drive in terms of capacity, physical appearance, physical size or features. This was invented because previously you had to change the tapes generally every hour when they ran out. With this digital camcorder hard drive, up to 240 hours of raw movie footage can be kept in the camera.

Aids Of Technology

The best part of it is that you can just simply transfer the whole file through FireWire or USB 2.0 in certain cases to your PC to be edited and so on. The transfer rate depends on the type of transfer you are using; USB generally takes a longer time than FireWire.

Previously, camcorders which had this internal hard drive were manufactured only by JVC, Panasonic and Sony, but today with growing popularity and demand, there are many other makers in the market coming up with newer and better models. When the digital camcorder hard drive was first introduced into the market, the capacity was only around 20 to 30 Gigabytes. But nowadays, there are hard drive sizes up to 60 Gigabyte. However, most of the high end ones are very expensive, and not so common.

As a result of having a digital camcorder hard drive as the main storage system, in certain cases, image quality has to be compromised, meaning that it has limited storage size compared to other type of camcorders using different video formats such as the MiniDV and so on. But despite this drawback, this type of camcorders is still very much favored, because with an integrated digital camcorder hard drive, transferring is faster than with other devices; because of the smaller video size due to reduced quality and technological advancements such as FireWire and so on. Even so, a digital camcorder hard drive still favorably compares to all the lower end storage system such as the tapeless system, in which you have a compressed video format like the MPEG-4 and so on.
